My paintings are often suggested by memory or remembered images but they are primarily generated by my imagination. I am deeply influenced and inspired by color, both emotionally and intellectually and it is this – not the observation of ‘reality’ – which guides my brush.
I allow the paintings themselves to show me the way as the work develops. To get the right composition I constantly manipulate, reapply and alter, moving lines, shapes and blocks of color to achieve a many-layered, textured surface, allowing the semi-obscured surfaces beneath to breathe and speak. If I can create a surface both mysterious and compelling, which draws the viewer in, inspiring them to examine their own imaginations, then I feel I’ve succeeded in my work.
